Hands-On "Candle Workshop" Event for High School Students at MERLAB

Operating under Isparta University of Applied Sciences, the Central Research Laboratory Application and Research Center (MERLAB) continues its activities aimed at raising scientific awareness among secondary education students. In this context, a "Candle Workshop" event was held with the participation of teachers and students from TOBB Vocational and Technical High School.

Organized for the students of TOBB Vocational and Technical High School, the event aimed to introduce students to the laboratory environment, enable them to experience production processes through hands-on activities, and develop their fundamental scientific skills. Within the scope of the event, an informative presentation was delivered by the Director of MERLAB, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tuğba Sardohan Köseoğlu, regarding the center's scientific infrastructure, research opportunities, and ongoing academic studies.

During the practical session conducted under the guidance of MERLAB Deputy Director, Asst. Prof. Dr. İkbal Demet Nane, students performed the essential stages of candle production—such as raw material selection, measuring, melting, molding, and cooling—in a hands-on manner. Throughout the workshop, students had the opportunity to develop scientific thinking skills, including establishing cause-and-effect relationships and planning production processes.

Designed around the theme of candle production, this workshop contributed to introducing vocational and technical high school students to chemistry-based applications while strengthening university-high school cooperation. Conducted with a hands-on learning approach, the event received positive feedback from the students.
