Little Scientists Experience the Joy of Science at MERLAB: "Making My Own Perfume" Workshop
Operating under Isparta University of Applied Sciences, the Central Research Laboratory Application and Research Center (MERLAB) has added another initiative to its events aimed at fostering a love for science in children at an early age.
In this context, 1st and 2nd-grade students from E College Primary School both had fun and gained hands-on experience with scientific processes during the "Making My Own Perfume" workshop held at MERLAB.
The event commenced with an informative presentation delivered by the Director of MERLAB, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tuğba SARDOHAN KÖSEOĞLU, regarding the center's research and scientific activities. Following the presentation, during the practical session conducted under the guidance of MERLAB academic staff Lecturer Dr. Murat KILIÇ and Deputy Director Lecturer Dr. Ömer DİLEK, the students turned fundamental scientific steps—such as measuring, mixing, observing, and trial-and-error—into an entertaining experience.
The young participants designed their own perfumes by combining their preferred essences with safe chemical components. Throughout the process, they acquired foundational knowledge on topics including the science of scent, formulation, and laboratory safety.
At the end of the event, the students filled special bottles with the perfumes they had prepared with their own hands, leaving the laboratory with unique products that they could keep for themselves or gift to their loved ones.
The MERLAB staff stated that such events aim to instill scientific curiosity in children at an early age and make learning permanent and enjoyable by connecting science with daily life.
Isparta University of Applied Sciences continues to bring children together with science through community-based scientific events and to support the researchers of the future.
